John Phillips: "always so"

always so, 2007 - "always so" is one in a series of videos I've made that address the
passing of time. Beginning in 2001, I became interested in looking for situations in which the direction of time's arrow could be ambiguous— natural settings where there are no indicators pointing clearly to the future, but rather actions and events which seem the same whether viewed moving forward or backward in time. "always so" is a fixed position shot of a cloud that kept forming and reforming in one location in the sky. I made it into a video loop of approximately 16 minutes forward then reversed. The loop is repeated three times on the DVD. It is neither edited nor manipulated other than the reversing and looping process.
